Visby was the main center of the Hanseatic League in the Baltic from the 12th to the 14th century. The Hanseatic town of Visby was inscribed on the World Heritage List in 1995 with the following justification: Visby is an outstanding example of a north European medieval walled trading.
The harbor, Gamla Hamn on Fårö, is thought during the Middle Age. Gamla Hamn is now a nature reserve with sea stacks and graves probably dating from the Viking Age. One of the sea stacks has been given many names, including Coffee Pot and Dog.
Stora Karlsö is one of the most interesting natural areas in Sweden and the world¡¯s second oldest conservation area after America¡¯s Yellowstone. With its thousands of sea birds, the island is quite an experience for the birdwatcher. It is also rich in history dating back to the Stone Age.
